I recently read an article that was published a couple of years ago on The Huffington Post UK website about the countries where kids are the happiest.
This is how the article started..
“We like to think our children are the happiest they can be, but are they the happiest in the world? New research completed by Goethe University surveyed 53,000 children between the ages of 10 and 12 to see just how happy they were.15 countries took part in the survey… and the UK didn’t come out on top. Romania did. The top spot was shortly followed by cheerful kids in Colombia, Israel third and Algeria fourth. The UK came in second from last.”
Israel came in 3rd. No, this isn’t a misprint. As surprising as this maybe sound to most of the world, the numbers don’t lie.
Tiny Israel. A country where kids are exposed to violence from an early age. A country where kids are used to seeing older kids walk around in army uniforms carrying guns. A country that the world media likes to showcase as an apartheid state that can do no right in the eyes of the world. And yet in spite of all of this, Israel came in at the number 3 spot.
While you may be surprised by this, I’m not. I grew up in Israel over 30 years ago and the memories of sun and fun filled days are still so vivid in my mind. These are the memories that also convinced my husband and I to leave our comfortable life in America and return back home to Israel to raise our kids. When people ask me what is most important to me, I tell them my kid’s happiness and there’s no better place for this to happen then Israel!!
