JUST THE FACTS MA’AM – The story behind the Aliyah facts

Many of you may recognize this famous line from the TV show Dragnet. While focusing on ust the facts is important in crime investigations, when it comes to analyzing the country’s Aliyah’s efforts, there is a lot more to analyze than just the facts.

As Michael Freund points out in his insightful article that appeared in last week’s The Jerusalem Post on the commonly quoted Aliyah facts is misleading. It’s not just about the facts – it’s about the story behind the facts. We need to focus on the Olim who either go back to their home country bitter and disappointed. We need to focus on the Olim who struggle mightily, not just when they arrive, but for months and often years later. We need to focus the financial, cultural, emotional and psychological drain that most Olim have to endure. And most importantly, we need to focus on how we as a country, community, shul and individual can do more to help and support.

If you, or someone you know, made Aliyah and you are having a difficult time, reach out the many wonderful organizations that want to help. We all recognize that it’s not just the facts, Ma’am. It’s the story behind the facts of each Oleh who sacrificed so much to realize their dream of living a long and happy life in Israel
